Keeping ancestral traditions alive: Procession of Bush rite to be recreated in Zhabinka District

22/05/2026 08:55

The Procession of the Bush rite will be held in the agrotown of Khmelevo, Zhabinka District on 31 May, BelTA learned from Zhabinka District Executive Committee.

This ancient spring-summer rite is held during the Trinity season. A young beautiful girl is chosen for the main role. She is adorned with branches, most often maple branches, and a large wreath. With an accordionist and local folk singers by her side, the girl walks from yard to yard, wishing each household health and abundance. In turn, the hosts traditionally greet the visitors and thank them for their good wishes by offering lard, bread, or money. It was believed that if a household was bypassed, well-being might elude that family.

“Our main goal is to preserve the cultural heritage. It is important to cherish the traditions that we have inherited from our ancestors,” the Zhabinka District administration said. The organizers emphasized that residents’ interest in their own culture helps preserve unique elements of intangible heritage.
